Where is the original sculpture?

During the turbulent period at the end of the Roman Empire, the old Cohen sculpture was buried and lost. It was rediscovered in 1506 near Domos Orea, Nero. Pope Julius II was told when the statue was found in the vineyard. The pope was a passionate classicist and sent his court artist Michelangelo to determine its value and oversee the excavation of the statue. The laocoon and his sons sculpture was placed in a niche on the wall of the Vatican’s Belvedere Garden, which is now part of the Vatican Museum.

The hero’s nudity with powerful muscles and precise anatomical details was appreciated by many Renaissance artists and influenced many of their works. Michelangelo painted many of the Lao people and his sons. Two years after studying the statue, Michelangelo began creating Vatican murals at the Sistine Chapel.
